windows disappear off the edge of the desktop

Hi All -

Frustrating simple question - my windows disappear when I drag to the edge of the desktop. They reappear when I get them back from the dock, but then all the other windows disappear.

Someone thought they were doing a good thing here, but what is it? how do I restore all the windows at the same time?
