Hi,

I am a former MobileMe user with an Apple ID and iCloud account as follows: "family_smith@me.com" (and therefore "family_smith@icloud.com).

This email address doesn't mean anything to the people I'm in contact with.

I therefore created a new Apple ID as follows: "john_smith@icloud.com".

Before I use my new Apple ID, I'd like to ask the following question.

Is it possible to use ALL iCloud syncing services with "john_smith@icloud.com" AND AT THE SAME TIME use my former Apple ID "family_smith@me.com" for the Mac App Store only?

Why should I do that?

because if i change it for a new Apple ID, I'll have to log in as "family_smith@me.com" on the Mac App Store in order to get the updates of all the softs I purchased, which is extremely inconvenient.

In other words, I'd use my former Apple ID for the Mac App Store ONLY and my new, meaningful Apple ID for all the rest.

Thanks.

    Welcome to the Apple Community.

Yes you can do that. You may have to manually move your data to the new account (calendars etc), but if you add the account as a secondary account instead (system preferences > mail, contacts & calendars), you could keep everything where it is and just use the email from the second account.

    Hi Sir Winston Churchill ;-)

    Thanks for your reply.

Your suggestion seems to be the best one. So, if I understand well, I should not modify my settings in System Preferences > iCloud.

I just need to set AppleMail with my new email address ("john_smith@icloud.com") and so on all my Macs and iDevices.

    Is that right?

Note: if so, during the "transition period", I assume I could have both email accounts in AppleMail ("john_smith@icloud.com" and "family_smith@me.com").

That's right except you want to add it as an iCloud account in system preferences > mail, contacts & calendars instead of via mail, it will set up mail for you without having to bother with other settings.

Yes that's correct, indeed you can carry on and use them both if you want or turn your first address off in system preferences > iCloud.

    thanks again.

i did what you suggested in System Preferences > mail, contacts & calendar.

i now have the second iCloud account set up but naturally with a warning message saying "this is not your main iCloud account".

    so 2 points, please:

    1. the "worrying" part of the message is: "you can't use iCloud storage". i therefore have no idea how much storage i can use for mail, contacts, calendars and notes... or am i missing something?

    2. if so, what about going back to my first idea: moving everything to the new account in order to make it my main account?

in such a case, would i be able to use my new account as my main account and to get rid of the actual main account ("family_smith@me.com"), deleting it completely from System Preferences while keeping using "family_smith@me.com" for the Mac App Store only?

Do you have a screenshot of that message or information about where you see it.

I have never seen such a message myself, I have a primary account and 2 secondary accounts in use and have encountered no such messages.

Well i have exactly the same screenshot you're displaying on your post.

Maybe i didn't make myself clear in my previous post, sorry. So a couple of points:

    1. As far as I can see on your screenshot, we, users, don't seem to have control on iCloud storage on our second iCloud account.

    2. On other respects, contrarily to what I wrote before, I'd rather not use both my iCloud emails addresses at the same time; in order to simplify things, i'd like to use my newly created address "john_smith@icloud.com" only.

Question is therefore, how do I move all the archived emails from "family_smith@me.com" to  "john_smith@icloud.com" ?

    3. sorry for asking the same question as before, but just as a reminder: once everything is set with my new iCloud account, will i be able to delete the previous one and use it only on the Mac App Store only?

Hope that's clear, very sorry for the confusion. Thanks for trying to help.

    1. As a secondary account doesn't have back up or document syncing features, you are extremely unlikely to ever need the 5 GB you are allocated. I wouldn't have thought this was a problem and if it ever is you can easily make it your primary account temporarily.
    2. Turn Mail on in both accounts, this will add both addresses to mail. Select the mail in the first account and drag it to the second. Then uncheck the mail option on your primary account at system preferences > iCloud.
    3. I thought you were keeping the first account as a primary account to save you manually moving all your calendars etc to your new account. But yes, even if you remove the first account as your primary account for iCloud, it can still be used for MAS, iTunes etc etc.

    Hi again,

thank you very much for the precious information.

i'm in the process of transferring all my email to my new account.

the problem with keeping the original, former MobileMe account is that for instance if i send a picture from my iPhone photo stream, it'll be sent under "family_smith@me.com", right?

of course, if the above mentioned can be avoided, please let me know.

but if not, the idea would be to move everything to the new account.

if i delete the original, former MobileMe account, i'm wondering what will happen when the iTunes Store needs to bill me for the apps I purchase on the MAS.

where will the iTunes Store invoices go? do i need to keep the original account just in iCloud web interface and forward the incoming mail to my new account?

So far as I know from the limited number of friends who share photostream albums with me, it appears that the name used for the shared album sharer is taken from their contact card.

If you want to move all your data across to your new account, you can do that (it's easier on the computer) I can show you, just let me know which data you want to transfer.

You should be able to change the address you use for your ID for iTunes, MAS etc

    Ok for the photostream information.

Yes I'd be interested in moving all my data across my new account so that it becomes my main account (contacts, calendars & reminders, notes, safari, photostream, documents and data, back to my Mac, localize my Mac, iPhone, iPad), thanks for your offer (i need to be very careful about the process).

As for changing the address I use for my ID for the MAS and iTunes Store, good news. I thought the change was impossible for former MobileMe users (as Apple mentions on its support pages) but if you say so, that'd be absolutely great.

Note: the main reason for all the above mentioned is that till now, as a former MobileMe user, since account "family_smith@me.com" is totally irrelevant for my contacts, I'm compelled to use an alias... Well, I was till yesterday, since now I got my secondary account set up with the rigth address "john_smith@icloud.com".

OK, a couple of things before I start. Firstly (and I'm hoping I'm not appearing rude) depending on how well you understand my instructions this may take a while, if this thread gets lost amongst others, please feel free to email me, my address is in my profile. Secondly, I think I may have been wrong about where shared photostreams get the sharers name from, I think it is likely to be the name you set up in your iCloud account.

    Screen Shot 2013-01-09 at 21.00.10.png

And thirdly, for the avoidance of doubt, we are changing accounts for iCloud, you can also change accounts for FaceTime and iMessage, but you should continue to use the account you have always used for iTunes and MAS. Finally all the swapping is done on your Mac, we can look at yor mobile devices after.

The first thing to do is swap your accounts so that family becomes your secondary account and JS becomes your primary account, we don't need to do this just yet, I have a couple of questions first, but let me know if you need instruction on swapping these over.

Contacts, calendars, reminders, notes and Safari bookmarks, you don't need to worry about at this stage, but don't swap accounts until we come back to them.

In regard to Photostream, do you have any photos in photostream that you do not have either in your camera roll on your mobile device or in iPhoto events on your Mac.

In regards to documents and data, what applications do you use this feature with.

Back to my Mac will just follow your account, but I'm not sure what localise my Mac is, can you enlighten me.

There also may be some mail that you want to move to your JS account, but we can take care of that too.

thank you very much for your offer, you don't appear rude, all the opposite !

i'll try answering your questions as best as i can.

    1. yes, i'd need instructions on how to swap my 2 accounts.

    2. photostream: i don't think so since Aperture does a monthly backup of it but i'll check before moving.

    3. documents and data. well, so many apps that i'm not sure i can't remember all of them, but i'll give it a try below:

    notes

    pages

    numbers

    pdfpen

    due

    clear

    wikibot

    tweetbot

    1Password of iOs

    foldingtext

    ia writer

    byword

    that should be it...

    4. "localise my Mac" is probably in "find my Mac" in English.

    5. As for the mail, i thought that was already done since i followed your previous instructions on this thread, i quote: "

Turn Mail on in both accounts, this will add both addresses to mail. Select the mail in the first account and drag it to the second. Then uncheck the mail option on your primary account at system preferences > iCloud.

but of course, if you have more instructions, please let me know.

OK, judging by the times we are conversing we are in completely different time zones, it's 2.30 in the morning here and I need to retire soon. I wasn't expecting so many types of documents and I haven't heard of many of them, I'm not sure I can guarantee the safe passage of all of them, but I'll sleep on them and get back to you.

sure, i hope you could get some sleep eventually.

no we're not that far (at least for the time being), it was very late for me too but i need to swap...

in order to make things as simple as possible for you, just a couple of points:

i did a full backup/clone of both my MBA & iMac with SuperDuper (as every evening).

as for the iCloud synced apps, don't worry too much provided that i assume i could always retrieve their last versions in my clones.
