When sending a new text through my messages I tap on the pencil logo on the right corner, from there as I am typing a name in my contacts list to send a message, I can still see old numbers that I no longer need or use. How do I get rid of that?

When sending a new text through my messages I tap on the pencil logo on the right corner, from there as I am typing a name in my contacts list to send a message, I can still see old numbers/contacts that I no longer need or use. How do I get rid of that?
