Netgear WNR834B v2 router as wireless repeater with Time Capsule not working properly, enlighten me.

My old(er) Netgear WNR834B v2 Router was collecting dust, so I tried to set it up in wireless repeating mode, taking signal from my current gen 2TB Time Capsule. The TC is running as a standard router with two networks (both WEP encrypted). When I plug the NG router into my MBP to configure, I get into the router options and get stuck after I type in the info.

I am using the IP 10.0.0.10 as the IP address from the time capsule, and the 2.4Ghz MAC address (didnt think it could do the 5.0Ghz).

The router will take these settings, then when the status bar reaches the end, it just sits there and does nothing. Am I supposed to use the device IP of 168.92.1.1? My understanding is that it needs to be an IP the TC can distribute.

Someone PLEASE help me with this, I can provide SS if needed!

Your setup will not work as wireless repeater.. you cannot repeat without using WDS.. you are not doing the WDS properly and it won't work even if you do.. in 95% of cases.

You can use the WNR834 as a WAP.. to do that, you give it an IP in the range of the TC.. you seem to have tried to do that but the address you are using is wrong. 10.0.1.1 is the TC IP.. by default. You should use an IP outside the dhcp range.. so I would recommend 10.0.1.201

You also turn off the dhcp server in the netgear..

Then ethernet connect the TC and LAN port on the Netgear. It will work as WAP.. if you want to place it far away use homeplug (EOP type) adapters. Or get long ethernet installed.

To repeat wireless to any apple router you need another apple router.

And don't use WEP. it is so insecure now.. it is meaningless.

If you want to entertain yourself.. and I do mean this as non-serious playtime project.

Flash the Netgear to dd-wrt.

http://www.dd-wrt.com/wiki/index.php/Supported_Devices#Netgear

It is listed in the compatible list.

DD-WRT will do universal repeater without having to setup anything on the TC.. except you need to use WPA + WPA2 security not WPA2 only.. and you need to use SMB type names.. short, no spaces pure alphanumeric.

Universal repeater in my experience.. is great in theory.. in practice its reliability is inversely proportional to the value of work you are doing.. ie it will always break down at critical points. Work fine to do nothing important.

Having done my time over.. I run ethernet everywhere.. or use specific systems that are tuned to each other.. like apple to apple routers.. as they work well if not 100%.. it is still better by far than non-standard inventions of the 3rd party community.
