Video cabling question

I have an early 2008 Mac Pro with an 8800gt video card. I would like to use this in my home theater and route the video through my audio/video receiver. Can I use a DVI-VGA-HDMI adapter so I can use a HDMI cable into the receiver for the video?

That won't work, but a DVI-to-HDMI cable should.

It won't carry sound though: you'll have to either feed analogue stereo audio from the 3.5mm minijack out to the receiver's RCA inputs for that, or TOS-link optical audio out to the receiver.
