I hardly think that the ants would survive long enough to do any damage at all. Without food and water, they would probably die fairly quickly or more likely - find their way out of the iPad like you witnessed.

I think it is unlikely they would chew though anything, and while I suppose they theoretically could short something out, I seriously doubt it.Everything should be fairly well insulated.
There's probably enough space in there for a few ants, if they decide to explore.
The iPad is not airtight, so yes, smaller species of ants very likely could get into it.

Go to the hardware store and get an ANT trap place it in front of the headphone jack of your Ipad and see what you catch!!!!
