Time Machine capabilities

Does Time Machine back up all software programmes so in the evnt of a hard drive failure you could reload all on the new hard drive without having to use the original discs?

Most but not all. I understand that it will not transfer applications like Microsoft Office which would require you to reinstall them separately. The Pondini website has virtually all of the information one may need regarding Time Machine:
