I think the ATI HD 5770 ought to work okay. I checked, I might be wrong, but it said this: Any mac with a PCI-Express slot and 10.6.4, so you probably will be okay

I have an nVidia GEforce 800GT, which is okay. Was hoping to get the 5770, but there was a huge boo-boo and it didn't happen :_(

The Apple-firmware 5770 (about US$250) works in every model Mac Pro. Drivers were included in the version of 10.6.4 that shipped with certain Mac Pro models, and for every Mac Pro running 10.6.5 and later.

In models before the 2008 model, the 5770 runs slightly slower because of PCIe 1 slots. The extra cost of the 5870 (about US$450) is not really justified for these earlier models.

Johnb-one is correct, the 5770 works just fine in the Mac Pro 1,1. Other than swapping dual-core for quad-core CPU's, I have your same machine and I am currently using the 5770.
