I'm trying to use my Apple TV to view my sky sports , I've got a sky go account set up on my iPad I've set up airplay/mirroring , when I try & watch it I can hear the program on my tv but the app stays on screen saying hdmi not supported so I can't watch only hear .
Am I doing something wrong ?
Is there a way around this ?

Sky have blocked AirPlay from working with their app.
So they have the option built into the screen then don't let you use it , typical sky , not happy
They aren't alone, many broadcasters do this.
Can you air play / mirror the paid for sky sports tv app through the ATV to a hd TV ?
No.
No way round it then , looks like ATV for sale

Please if you can-I just purchased Apple TV --the NBC App from my IPad will Airplay an introductory commercial but will not play the video portion of the program I selected, just audio, do you think it is being blocked?

I would assume so, I'm not in the US to test it, but would think this is the case.
If I pay for the sky sports mobile app for ipad £6 month can I mirror that to the ATV
Nope, that is blocked by Sky as well. Note that the £6 (actually £4.99) monthly subscription charge in that app only gives you live access to the Sky Sports News channel - you do not get Sky Sports 1-4. The only way you will get those live channels in an app is if you have a TV subscription to them (but you still can't mirror them to the ATV)
