App I don't own appears in updates - won't go away

For a couple of weeks now, an app I don't own has shown up as an update in the App Store on my iPad (iPad 2, iOS 6.0.1). The app in question is MotionX GPS Drive. I have never purchased it, nor to my knowledge has anyone given it to me as a gift. If I try to update it, an error dialog appears with the message "You can not update this software since you have not owned the major version of this software." Also, when there are other updates I can't use the "Update All" button, as this error stops the others as well (I can, however update them with individual buttons). I've attached a screen shot for reference.

Rebooting the iPad has no effect. Signing out and in of the App Store has no effect. The update does not appear in iTunes on the computer I sync the iPad with. The app does not show up in "Purchased" either in iTunes on the computer or in the App Store on the iPad.

It's a minor annoyance, but an annoyance nonetheless. I would like to avoid restoring from backup if possible. Is there anything else I can try? Thanks in advance. The screen shot is below:

Do you see the update in iTunes? Also, have you ever downloaded MotionX-GPS Drive on your device or on anyone elses device in your household? I'v seen post around the forums with other people having this same issue and it seems like everyone has a different fix. If you could provided some more information, I am sure others may be able to jump in and help.

Thank you for contributing. As I wrote above, I have not downloaded MotionX GPS Drive and it does not appear as an update in iTunes.

Would you please point me in the direction of those other posts you mention? Before posting this, I searched with what I expected to be relevant terms, and found nothing.

EDIT: I see those posts now from looking at your recent contributions and will follow them. Listing them here in case others wish to refer to them:

Here are a few that are similar to what you are expericening.

This one is for an app that this users was seeing in their updates

This is the only one I can find at this moment, but one thing you can try doing is setting your date time to sometime in the future. Then go back into the app store and try to install the update, but you will get an error message because your date time is off. Next you will need to switch your date time back to automatic and then reboot your device. This should hopefully help, if not maybe we can get someone elses idea's on how to fix this.

If I've read that correctly, the issue desribed in that thread appears to be about an app that merely changed it's name between updates (along with some concern about the particular developer). I've seen apps that change names numerous times and it isn't really a problem in and of itself. In this case, I can assure you that I've never owned any previous version of a MotionX product under any name.

Well, I tried that: I set the date to tomorrow, shut down app store completey, rebooted. It was still there, and it's still there now after restoring the automatic date and another restart.

I appreciate your effort though. Thanks.

In my case, this is now resolved. Doing a spotlight search on the ipad for the word "motionx" yielded an unrelated app called "XLCamera® - Universal," iTunes link (Canada): https://itunes.apple.com/ca/app/xlcamera-universal/id441038999?mt=8

The names and developers don't have anything to do with each other, and so it shouldn't have even shown up in the search. Removing it and restarting the iPad caused the update for "Motionx GPS Drive" to disappear. I made no other changes. The reboot might not have been necessary. I didn't check before rebooting.

It was also easy to reproduce on my iPad: I reinstalled XLCamera from the app store and checked updates immediately thereafter. Motionx GPS Drive was there. Removing XLCamera again removed the update for Motionx GPS Drive.

The suggestion to do a search on the iPad came from an Apple Support Rep. Thanks to her!

I tried the XLCamera advise it didn't work. I removed the camera app first, motion x was still there in updates. I deleted motion x and it showed up again in my updates list only now I need to update it not open. So I tapped on update and it installed it on my ipad again. So the only good thing about buying it is that I can push the update all button. You can't get rid of it. I suggest Apple gets rid of the app for good and see if that works.

Cj,

Even if you have purchased the app and have XLCamera installed it will still show up in your updates. The only way to get ride of it is by deleting XLCamera, but it needs to be XLCamera Universal not the iPhone version. Also, do a spotlight search for MotionX-GPS Drive on your device. XLCamera should still show up under MotionX-GPS Drive, if you have MotionX-GPS Drive on your device. Very odd that deleting XLCamera has not cleared up this behavior for you.

Thank you, solve my problems too. No need to restart. I delete XLCamera, then open App Store. The updates tab now clear from MotionX GPS update.

Additional information:

I get this problems after update iOS version from 5.0.1 to 6.1. In iOS 5.0.1, there are no problems with XLCamera Universal.

I suspect that this problems is specific for iOS 6.x. Let's notify the app maker and Apple about this.

I don't mind deleting XLCamera because I never use it, but it wil be annoying for those who need the app and will be disaster for the app developer. This problems could also happened to other apps if not get fixed by Apple.
