I am not an apple tv user user (yet!) but by brother wants to be and in the local Apple store last week, he was told his imac was too old to run it! He bought the imac as a present for his wife (more generous than me ) Dec 2010.

It is running OS10.8.2 and is a 3.06 ghx Core i3 with 4GB ram Not sure what HD size but more space is only a cable away!

Is it really true a 2 yr old mac wont run appletv?  What is the problem? When pushed, they were told that it might work but it would be like riding a racing bike on very old, worn out tyres!

You don't even need a computer to use an Apple TV. But if you have one, you can use the Apple TV to play content you have on your computer.

Your brothers computer is more than capable of doing this.

I think you are referring to AirPlay Mirroring. See > http://support.apple.com/kb/HT5404 AirPlay Mirroring requires a Mid 2011 or newer iMac, so if your computer isn't supported, you can install AirParrot > http://www.airparrot.com
