apple tv unable to access mac and iTunes library via homesharing

I have just installed an apple tv not sure which gen, ?gen2?(model a1427) and it keeps telling me to turn home sharing on in itunes on my mac. The home sharing is on in iTunes. I have a cisco m20 valet plus as a router could this be my issue? thanks

AppleTV 2, Mac OS X (10.7.5)

Yes I know which ports are required but unless you know what you are doing it might be confusing.

Refer to your router manual/manufacturer for any settings that are specific to that model.

But if your router was provided by your ISP, you might be better asking them for help.
