I have:

  • iphone 4
  • PC

Partner has:

  • Android phone
  • (NO apple devices, hence NO apple id)

_____

I need a solution that provides BOTH of these:

  1. Ability for me and partner to share a calendar
    1. (I will also have my own private calendar, of course)
  2. A way to sync all my calendars with a desktop application
    1. MUST run on and save files to desktop
    2. MUST have a good search function

Please take a moment to help me out. I'm not even sure such a thing exists!

What desktop application would the calendar sync with? Online google calendar only is not okay.

Can I sync just the calendar that I want to share?

What about my private calendar? Would I have to move that to google calendar to be able to see both at once on my iphone?

And I already have my contacts and email working fine. I don't want to sync them via google--is that possible?

You can sync the items you want to sync, read in depth on the features.

Once you throw an Android device into the mix, you pretty much marry in to the Google ecosystem.

I've been reading...the documentation is truly appalling.

The desktop application would essentially be your browser.  Any device could then sync/access this calendar.

I guess you could sync Outlook with the Google Calendar if you need some of Outlook's features.

I use a MacBook Pro at home, and a Windows 7 machine at work.  I sync my work calendar with Google Calendar Sync from outlook on my work windows machine, and then set up my MBP, iPad4, and iPhone5 to all have that gmail account and sync the calendar from that.

On the MBP, I use the OS X 10.8 calendar app, on the Windows work machine I use outlook, on the iPhone I use Week Calendar, and on the iPad I use Planner Plus.  Both my personal and work calendars sync fine across all those devices and apps using google calendars/gmail accounts.

I don't see any info that I can keep my private calendar, which is on icloud, share a calendar with partner and his 'droid on google, and be able to see everything in one interface on my iphone.

And I don't see any info on being able to sync the info to something on my desktop, that I can edit and search. I want a copy of the data locally.

Links would be very much appreciated!

Or recommendations on how to find someone expert in these matters and willing to answer my questions and help me one-on-one.

Any account you have on your iPhone that has a calendar function can be added to the list of calendars accessed via the iOS calendar app.  So yes, you can turn on the calendar feature in your iCloud mail account settings, and your gmail account settings and those two calendars will show up on your iPhone.  If you share your google calendar with someone, that has nothing to do with the iPhone itself - just set that up online in your gmail account settings and it should work.  Your iPhone is just going to populate the Calendar app with whatever entries are in the calendars enabled through the account settings.

You may be overthinking this.  Just set up your private, personal calendar on iCloud and turn that on in the iPhone iCloud account settings.  Then, set up your google calendar online, with whatever sharing settings you wish.  Set up that gmail account on your iPhone, enable the calendar setting, and go.

On your computer - if a Mac, just enable those two accounts in Calendar.  If on a PC, you would use the iCloud control panel to sync the iCloud account with Outlook, and Google Sync app to sync the google calendar with outlook.

"The desktop application would essentially be your browser."

Unfortunately, that's not acceptable. I must have files on my computer that I can access, search, and edit.

I don't know much about Outlook and don't have it on my computer. Isn't it an email program? I will have to see if it has a calendar component, and try to figure out if I can sync just that with it.

What 'files' are you going to keep in a calendar?  Files that need to be edited are not usually stored in a calendar.

Outlook has email, calendar, contacts, notes, reminders, etc.  It's made by Microsoft and has been the most popular personal information manager for years, both corporate and personal.  That being said, Google stuff can replace most of it for personal use.

As indicated, I have a PC. I don't currently use google for anything except a gmail acct. I'll have to look into exactly what Outlook does and whether it's in my budget.

What is this icloud control panel? The only thing I could find doesn't seem to offer the functionality I'm seeking.

No one has yet said I can see a google calendar and an icloud calendar visually merged into one interface on my iphone.

Yes outlook is an email program, but it is also a calendar program.

What do you mean "files"?  Most calendar applications are designed such that you search the calendar itself, not static files on the computer.  Outlook and other calendar programs have their search function builtin using a standard search bar.

I can save my outlook calendars as a web page, or as an *ics file, but those would be largely useless to me until reimported into a calendar app (unless you actually search files for text strings?).

Actually, yes I did - as I said, for any account you setup on your iPhone that has a calendar, just enable that accounts calendar setting, and it will appear in the iOS calendar app.  Each calendar will be displayed as a separate color entry, but all in one integrated calendar display.

You can combine iCloud calendars, google, yahoo, aol/aim accounts, MSlive - any and all, as many as you need. If the account has a calendar, iOS will sync that calendar and display its entries.
