MacBook Pro wakes from sleep at connect/disconnect AC power

Same problem here. Also 13" 2012 MBP (9,2). It's a detail but it's annoying me.

The problem is even worse in the morning, after more than 4 hours standby. When I unplug the AC adapter, I hear my optical drive (even without opening the screen) and when I open the macbook, a progress bar is shown on the screen. It seems to be resuming after hibernation.

Strange thing: it does only happen when connected to AC. The exact opposite would make sense, but this doesn't make sense at all.

I would really like to know how to fix this.

This is a problem with all 2012 MacBook Pros that have applied the update DL1609 via Software Update. This update is called MacBook Air and MacBook Pro Update 2.0. The only fix that exists for this is to reinstall OSX and just not install this update when it shows in the available updates list in the AppStore. Just hide it until this issue is fixed by Apple.

If your OSX 10.8.2 version is anything after version (12C60) then you will have this problem. The problem is as follows. With the system asleep with clamshell closed, plugging and unplugging the power cable causes the system to wake up and go back to sleep. Additionally, leaving the system plugged into power for over 4 hours will cause the system to go into hibernation, but only when plugged in. If it's not connected to AC power while sleeping for that long, it will not enter hibernation.

Please call Apple and complain about this problem. I have been working with them for over a month and a half trying to get them to fix this and it's a major hand-holding process because they didn't initially understand the issue. Add to that the fact that they insisted that this problem doesn't exist and it just made it that much harder to get them to see the issue.

You need to call them AppleCare and let them know you're having this problem. Along with that, email the rep you're working with links to every Apple Support Forum thread you can find on this. Trust me, there are several with this same exact problem.

I've had is since November! In the middle of a restore now..

It was the end of November when the DL1609 patch was released.

Any news on that guys? Did someone found a solution? I have the same issue on md101 mid 2012.

Regarding waking up when AC power is attached/detached I have contacted Apple support and they were able to reproduce the problem. They consulted the behaviour with their engineers and they said that this is the expected behaviour. I don't know what is the reasoning behind this however I was also informed that I can provide feedback (via apple.com/feedback ) and I did.

If you guys think (like I do) that this feature is annoying and probably dangerous (when you detach the sleeping macbook from power and start toss it to put into backpack while hdd spins...) then I suggest to nag Apple on this matter.

So glad i've found that it's not just my Macbook! Also have a Macbook Pro mid 2012 and have had ongoing phone calls and repairs to the Macbook as apple didnt understand it. So far they have replaced Internal Ram, MLB, Sleep Sensor, Battery indicator and also changed my charger. Now i'm being told its normal behaviour. Pretty iritating thought! They said it only happens to mid 2012 Macbook and onwards.

I have had this problem since November 2012, and I have finally had a GREAT Apple adivsor to help me.

He found an article saying that the deep sleep after four hours is normal. It is called Safe Sleep and was introduced to comply with an EU regulation.

He is still looking into the issue of waking from sleep when power is connected or disconnected. My logs have been sent off to the Apple Engineers, so hopefully I'll know by the end of the week.

lol, we know why it was added in. There's other threads about this. However, don't expect much from Engineering. They'll tell your rep that it's expected behavior and to send you away.

They've made a few revisions to 10.8.3 to the behavior for this, but not where it completely solves the wake issue with the charger connect/disconnect. Hopefully that'll get addressed in 10.8.4 or whatever next version comes out. This is just a software issue and not hardware... Windows in Bootcamp can be put to sleep or hibernate and the system doesn't wake up when you connect/disconnect the power cable. This is just OSX's crappy coding with power management that's to blame. It's laughable really.

Needless to say, this is a problem I have with a new MacBook Pro delivered a week or two ago. Not the end of the world, I guess, but annoying - particularly ironic that I have another MacBook Pro that occasionally does the "whirr whirr clunk" of the optical drive coming alive when you least want it, as this machine replaces a MBP 2008 that needed a firmware fix for the drive. I'm happy to hear that this time it's a software problem...

I had been in contact with Apple regarding this between November 2012 and April this year and eventually they told me that their engineers had looked into it and that it was expected behaviour.

I told them that it is stupid, especially because, in my Incase shoulder bag and neoprene slip, there is a port to charge the MacBook Pro, but as soon as you plug it in, it wakes. The vents are covered and surely it will overheat. The guy I spoke the though over the phone and by email said that the MacBook Pro will try to resume sleep as soon as possible.

Thanks. It seems to only come out of sleep for 15-40 seconds when switching to ac power/battery and back, annoying but not a huge deal for me currently. It must come out of sleep to detect changes and what not.
