I get the massage that the back up HD can't be repaired.  It says that I can still use the HD but I can't make changes to the files and that I should reformat.  I thought I went through this process with the disc utility but I'm not sure that I did it correctly because I'm getting the same message.  Help!

While this would cause the HDD to wear quicker,  I have never had trouble with just leaving my HDD plugged in.

hmm...  Make sure you follow these directions: http://www.macworld.com/article/1159150/partitionharddrive.html

If this doesnt work, you probably are experiencing a HDD failure.

At current prices, with 1 TB external drives selling for less than $100, I suggest it makes no sense to risk your data to a drive that may well be about to die.
