What do you need to publish a shook in iBook ?

What steps do I need to take to publish an ebook in iBook ?

Do I need an ISBN?

I would like to do the formatting myself and wasn't sure what I needed to do?

I think your first step is..... understanding that what you are asking for is an "How to..." or Big Dummies Guide to ....." The nearest is a free to download book in PDF, "Publishing with iBooks Author" from O'Reilly.

The best thing you can do is.... dont expect anybody here to spend a day or more giving a step by step guide...

Go back in the forum posts a few months and start reading the questions posted - the replies if collated become your handbook!

Seems clear. Again, 'optional'.

Apple says this about that on pg 20 of the publisher guide:

About ISBNs

An International Standard Book Number (ISBN) is a 13-digit number that uniquely identifies books and book-like products published internationally. The ISBN identifies one title or edition of a title from one specific publisher and is unique to that edition. An EPUB file is considered an edition and must have a unique ISBN number.

Although the ISBN is optional for books on the iBookstore, the ISBN is often required for reporting your book’s sales to industry reporting agencies and for national and international charts.

Hi,

Your best bet is using an epub creator like iAuthor or Pages, buying your own ISBNs and then opening an account with iTunes Connect.

I recently published a children's picture book and the entire process took me about 1 month. Don't get sucked into buying packages from aggregators, you can do it all on your own if you have some time and patience to spare.

I understand the ISBN structure.. I have not seen anything to indicate that the requirments for paid books has now removed the obligation to include an ISBN.

My understanding is that while there are those who publish books into the iBookstore and other major ePub outlets online - equally there are those ( like me) who publish into the iBookstore only.

Not needing an ISBN removes a cost barrier and makes getting a US tax file number more worth the trouble and opening a paid books account.

I didn't try to explain anything about the structure... I qouted the section from the guide that contains this information that is directly related to your question:

"Although the ISBN is optional for books on the iBookstore, ..."

As well, please see that document so you can have your own concrete reference in full context, etc. rather than just user-to-user here 🙂

If you'd like to discuss ISBN's in detail, it may be best to start your own thread so it can receive the unique attention it deserves and you can better track, close if solved etc. thanks.

KT, Thanks for your clarification, I have seen the document as you suggested... but its really full of Apple "..do this BUT... " type of wording, which is why I prefer to hear from those users who have experience to pass on rather than depend on interpretations of what is valid and what is ..said to be valid; as the long winded threads about image sizes turned out to be.
