I was told by an apple associate that they changed their operating system so that made the ipod touch 3rd gen obsolete. Is this true? Are there no games I can download for my ipod?

An ipod touch second gen can use ios 4.2.1
It can therefore use any app that requires ios 4.2.1 or lower
If you really have a 3rd-generation iPod touch, it can run up through iOS 5.1.1 for which many apps - probably the large majority - are still available. Confirm what generation of iPod you really have:

If you actually have an older model, there are fewer and fewer apps avaialble as developers drop support for older versions of iOS, but apps still remain. Whether any would be apps you wish to run is something I can't say.
