How to upgrade from Leopard to snow leopard?

Hi, I want to upgrade my Mac from Leopard to Lion or Mountain Lion. I'm running 10.6.3 (Leopard) and want to understand what I need to do. I searched for the Snow Leopard s/ware upgrade and read that I need a CD or DVD ? Can is be downloaded, purchased or what? Any advice is welcome.

First, you need to clarify what you're currently using, because 10.6.3 is not Leopard, it's Snow Leopard.

Snow Leopard is only available on a DVD, it can't be downloaded.

If you actually have Snow Leopard 10.6.3, then you can update to 10.6.8 by using Software Update.
