cannot update apple software for my iphone or ipods on my pc. I have windows xp

I'm having problems updating Apple software on my iphone & ipods on my pc - I have windows xp I can download music from the apple store without any problems, however apple software will not load on eg 10.6 or 11.0.1 - I'm not very computer literate so any help would be appreciated.
