3.55 GB Magically Occupied by "Other"

When I hook my ipad up to my imac, it use to accurately show how much harddrive I had used up, but the other day suddenly this 3.55 GB of "other" appeared.

It is a 16 GB ipad and when I view my usage according to what shows up in itunes on my imac, it adds up to 7.218 GB not including this "other" 3.55 GB and says I have 2.98 GB left to use.

When I view "Usage" under the General tab on my ipad it says I have 2.8 GB left to use, and everything adds up to 7.3451 GB (I made sure to click "Show all Apps" so I didn't miss anything).

Any ideas on correcting this without having to completely wipe it out and restore it?

Thanks.

How Do I Get Rid Of The ā€œOtherā€ Data Stored On My iPad Or iPhone?

http://tinyurl.com/85w6xwn

With an iOS device, the ā€œOtherā€ space in iTunes is used to store things like documents, settings, caches, and a few other important items. If you sync lots of documents to apps like GoodReader, DropCopy, or anything else that reads external files, your storage use can skyrocket. With iOS 5/6, you can see exactly which applications are taking up the most space. Just head to Settings > General > Usage, and tap the button labeled Show All Apps. The storage section will show you the app and how much storage space it is taking up. Tap on the app name to get a description of the additional storage space being used by the app’s documents and data. You can remove the storage-hogging application and all of its data directly from this screen, or manually remove the data by opening the app. Some applications, especially those designed by Apple, will allow you to remove stored data by swiping from left to right on the item to reveal a Delete button.

There are several factors that affect the amount of storage space on an iPad. First is the true amount of space on a hard drive. There is a math difference in how companies spec hard drive size and the true amount of available space. Second the iPad has some pre-installed apps that take up space. The 16GB iPad starts out with only 13.8GB of available space.

Something on your iPad is corrupt. it could be a simple miscalulation of the storage capacity that syncing with iTunes might cure, or it could be a real issue that only a restore will cure. That's why "other" has bloated out of control on your iPad.

You can try syncing with iTunes, unsyncing and resyncing all photos, restoring from a backup - or doing a complete restore back to factory settings, which sometimes is the only way to get rid of the out of control "Other".

Deselect the content and sync to remove it. Uncheck the box next to the Sync Photos Heading and then click on Apply in the lower right corner of iTunes to remove all of the photos. Then check/click on the Sync Photos Heading again, Click on Apply - to put all of the photos back onto the device.

That doesn't mean that this will fix the issue, but it is one of the recommended things to try.

The "other" category was starting to get pretty large on my iPad and had hit about 3.5 GB but I assumed that was OK since I had what I though was a really number of files on my device. I was having another issue so I decided to reset all of my settings - lo and behold, my other dropped to about 259 MB.

When I did this - all of my photos were removed from the iPad and the only reason that I can think of why that happened is when you reset all settings - you have to reenter all of your device preferences again in the settings app. By doing that I removed the allowed access to photos on my device in the privacy settings, so that removed all of the photos n the iPad except for the camera roll photos. I resynced all of my photos in iTunes - and everything has been great since then.

If you want to try that - Settings>General>Reset>Reset all Settings.
