ProRes 422 - plain 'Proxy' 'LT' or 'HQ? (and joining AVCHD clips)

Which is best when converting AVCHD files in MPEG Streamclip for FCP7 please?


Also, what do people reccommend for joining up AVCHD clips?


Streamclip offers this in the bach list, but then throws up error messages when I try it.


iMovie seems to do it - so importing to iMovie > joining > exporting to Streamclip > importing to FCP looks like on option, but time-consuming


Then there's http://www.aunsoft.com/final-mate-mac/


Which is recommended, please - or is there something better.

Confused by what you mean by "joining up the clips?" This streamclip function is only really useful when converting DVD files-- it stitches together all the various VOB files into a coherent program.


As noted by pjrails, the log and transfer function is really optimal for this workflow. you'll note that the prores files are a lot larger than the avchd files. Here's what I do


1. Archive the card files, ALWAYS maintaining the complete card structure

2. Open a project and use log and transfer, set to the prores flavor of your choice. 9 times out of 10 proresLT will do just fine.

3 When the project is complete, you can delete the prores media.

4 If you ever need to reconstruct the program for changes or additions, simply open the project, lasso the offline clips and re-transfer.


You can't as easily do this if you've used another program to arrive at your editing files.

Thanks for the Shane Ross link - it's certainly clarified the import for me. I was advised that Streamclip was quicker and more relaible than using FCP which is why I was importing anyhow and then converting in that - but the internal method is so much easier it's going to be quicker and safer for sure.


By joining up the clips I meant having an assemply of shots as one clip like you would if you digitised from tape (as I have always done in the past - being a file newbie), rather than scores of single short chips.I don't think FCP offers this, (does it?) but anyway now that I have a better idea how to name the clips quickly it may not be such a problem. Certainly saves spooling to set in/out points all the time


I've never wanted this before, but I wonder if there is anyway to show thumbnails in the browser? That would deffo solve it for me.

For the benefit of anyone else coming here - I found the way to join up lots of short clips into something more like the way they appeared off a tape: iSkySoft. It does the prores conversion I was asking about, and merges clips too.


If not using iskysoft, just log and transfer (which is better if you think you may need to redigitise after emptying your scratch) the alternative is to make up a timeline of clips. Just select and drag to an empty timeline and they all pop in, in sequence. You can just spool along that (or even better step from clip to clip) and then copy and paste into your proper edit. (If you need a particular duration, use the blade before you copy - or drop into an empty place and then trim there.
