I recently was gifted an iPad 3 from my boyfriend to use as I please, since he got a new one.  I also recently got an iPhone 5.  He had the ipad set up to his phone number, and when I logged his apple ID out of setting>apples&itunes and put mine in, and also went to settings>messages>and added my apple account info, it only gives me a check mark for my email, and not one for my phone number.

When it was logged into his account, he had a checkmar I next to his email and his phone number, so he would receive all his iMessages through his ipad. I don't see anywhere to add a phone number.  Anyone have any ideas why this isn't working?
