can't change volume, circle with slash through it appears

Hi,

My mac had recently had issues with freezing, luckily I fixed it by resetting the PRAM.

Ever since I've resetted it, my computer has been working fine but now I can't adjust my volume.

The volume symbol pops up but a cricle with a slash through it pops up underneath. I have already checked the sound

in settings and I can't adjust anything. It's not a headphone issue and it's not on mute.

HELP PLEASE!!!

MacBook Pro, Mac OS X (10.7.5)

I had problems like this, they had to do with the headphone jack though. After they occurred once they continued on a regular basis 1+/week, could be fixed by playing around with the jack, until they couldn't. Long story short: a broken jack and a confused os. I solved my problems with a USB headphone jack. Even if you're sure it isn't the headphone jack try plugging in any alternate audio output devices you have to see if you can control the volume for them (be sure to select them in the System Preferences/Sound). If it's still no go there's always the PRAM and the SMC, but if you can get a device to work and the problems presist the system somehow isn't retriving control over the volume settings.
