Press home button, hold in power button for several (10?) seconds, then release. Icon re-appears!
I remembered reading it in a different forum/thread.... Not sure who to credit, but the big reset did the trick. I have had to do it more than once. I'm not sure what causes it exactly.

I am having the same problem, the appleTv installed ok on my Tv I installed the update and enabled airplay but on my Ipad 3 version 6.1.3 there is no icon for airplay I have looked in videos and multitaking bar by the volume, I also tried resetting the Ipad. I cannot find the icon anywhere. Any suggestions - is this a common problem with Ipad3??

Thanks for your reply I have tried all of these and the icon isn't in the music either.
I think I will have to give up and sell the appleTv and warn friends about this issue.
Apple needs to sort this - so much for buying the latest tech!!!

I have an iPad 3, I have two Apple TVs, I've never had a problem with Airplay. If there was something Apple needed to sort then it wouldn't work for anybody.
Dual you have a dual band router? How old is your router? Are you sure the ATV and iPad are on the same network on the same band?

But is the modem a dual-band modem? With some of the early dual-band modems while the SSID is the same you can end up with the ATV connecting to the 5Ghz side while the iPad connects to the 2.4GHz side and they cannot see each other. The workaround is to set up your router with different network names for the separate bands so you can ensure which one you are connecting to.

Thanks for the reply.
How do I find out if the modem is dual band - I have checked the manual and it doesn't say anything about dual band. The modem was brand new 2 years ago from the national telephone company for this country.

I would call for support from the telephone company. Which leads to what might be another issue, their router may not be Bonjour packet compatible so they may need to send you a different router.

Thanks - just spent 30 minutes on the phone to telecom - first they said it was nothing to do with the modem but the apple products instead, by end said they only do one sort of modem and that the only option is to buy an apple router to plug into it.

Thanks for all your help
Just looked - Apple NZ doesn't sell apple routers / express - so I may have to go with buying one from overseas (UK has them).
I have ordered a ligthning HDMI connection from apple and will try plugging the ipad direct into the TV and if that works will then sell the appleTv and wait for NZ to catch up before trying to go wireless again.
Thanks again for all your help
