The sleep wake button in on the side of your iPad opposite the Home button.
First thing to try is to reset your device. Press and hold the Home and Sleep buttons simultaneously ignoring the red slider should one appear until the Apple logo appears. Let go of the buttons and let the device restart. See if that fixes your problem.

Same as all the others, top right in portrait view with the home button at the bottom.
The sleep/wake button is button on the top edge of the iPad, the home button is the button the front of the iPad below the screen. If you want to try a soft-reset (i.e. a reboot) then press and hold both of those buttons for 10 to 15 seconds, after which the Apple logo should appear.
Or you could try closing the Mail app via the taskbar : from the home-screen (i.e. not with the Mail app open on-screen), double-click the home button to open the task bar at the bottom of the screen, then press and hold one of the apps on that taskbar for a couple of seconds until they start to shake and then tap the '-' on the top left corner of the Mail app to close it, and touch any part of the screen above the taskbar to stop the apps shaking and to close the taskbar. Then try re-opening the Mail app
my wife thanks you IMMENSELY
The sleep button is the power button in the upper right corner of the iPad.
Reboot the iPad by holding down on the sleep and home buttons at the same time for about 10-15 seconds until the Apple Logo appears - ignore the red slider - let go of the buttons.
I realize it has been a while, but I am just now viewing this in June, 2016. I have a 2014 or 2015 Ipad.
My sleep button is on the very top of the Ipad, just for those who have a current model. Not to discount what you said, but to assist those who may have a later Ipad.
See my previous reply.
The sleep/wake button, that is on the side edge of the iPad, opposite of an iPad's Home button, IS the Power button, also.
Hold the button down until a power off/Shutdown slider appears on your iPad's screen.
Slide your finger over the Power off slider. Your iPad will turn black showing a spinning gear symbol, then it will shutdown and go black/blank.
The iPad is now shutdown.
Good Luck!

The power/sleep button has always been on top of the iPad, but IT IS opposite of the iDevice/iPad Home button, though.
Has always been.
I have a new large iPad Pro, BTW.
Yes, you are correct. Ralph, by saying " on the side 'opposite' the Home button, likely meant the top. Soooo, my misunderstanding. Thank you, Michael. Enjoy your new iPad Pro.
