The mentioned default password is too short.
The default password of the Airport Base Station would be "public.", but when joining the "Apple Network xxxxxx", I need a password of 8 characters?
What am I missing?
iMac, OS X Mountain Lion (10.8.2)

Maybe a bit more clarification. I did a factory reset (10 seconds on the reset button) on my Airport Express. Now, when I want to join the network, created by the Airport Express, it asks for a password. However, the join-button only becomes enabled when entering 8 characters. the password "public." has the length of 7.
Some help would be appreciated, because I'm missing my AirTunes 😟
The password for the AirPort Base Station is for gaining access to the router for making changes to its configuration.
The password for the wireless network is for connecting to the network and the Internet from various client devices.
If you haven't entered a network security code for the network in the AirPort Express, then the network password would be blank until you enter one by accessing the AirPort Base Station using AirPort Utility and entering the Base Station password (public).
OK. Thanks. I thought you needed to join the network created by the Airport in order to configure it. And for some magical reason, the device pops up now in Airport Utility. Thanks!
