GENERATION 4 - STUCK ON LOCK

I CAN'T GET MY IPOD TO DO ANYTHING. THE LOCK ICON IN THE UPPER LEFT CORNER WILL NOT DISAPPEAR WHEN THE SLIDE THE LOCK BUTTON BACK AND FOURTH. I HAVE TRIED PRESSING THE MENU AND MIDDLE BUTTON AT THE SAME TIME TO RESET - BUT NOTHING.
