Q: Why won't my MacBook Pro start up from the grey prohibitory sign?

My MacBook Pro won't turn on from the grey screen. I have tried refreshing the RAM, and that has not worked. I tried placing the start up disk into the computer when turning it on and that still has done nothing.

It takes a while for it to get to the prohibitory sign. Before the prohibitory sign it usually has an apple and it just sits there for a while.

I don't know what to do.

Help is wanted.

Thank you very much!

Hi, I as well have the same problem as Mattkkm -- I've tried several booting techniques including using recovery discs, but when it gets to that screen MY HARDDRIVE DOES NOT APPEAR! In my case, I have a macbook pro Mountain Lion OS X 10.6.8. So, do you think that it is my internal "HDD"--whatever that stands for--or what? What product will I need to search for on the OWC website to rectify this problem on my laptop?

Also, Mattkkm, did the replacement of the HDD help you in your case? You never followed up with the results.

I  know that my/this post is significantly later from the original discussion, but I hope someone answers!

Same here, got a mid 2008 imac 24 with snow lion, HD is probably dead, even if it shows up in the boot -alt

I also attached an external drive to it, for temp solution and installation, isn that possible?

It doesnt show up in the boot thought, any smart ideas for workaround here?

I installed a new and better HD (500gb) and that fixed the problem. Before, I had it backed up on an external HD but that wouldn't work  because I didn't have the re-install discs copied to it. But, since the new HD, its been back to normal for the most part. The only difference is that when I close it to sleep, the light doesn't just go off like it used to; instead, it stays lit up for a moment then goes off.

I ordered my HD from OWC, but if I could do it over again, I probably would have just went to Office Depot and picked one up because they are around the same price, yet the one one OWC did come with the tools I needed to replace it.

    Good luck to you!
