Ethernet sanning via airport extreme

With my new airport extreme I can set up the MP 640 Canon printer to print through the airport extreme USB port. But this multipurpose printer and scanner can only print via the airport extreme not scan. However two days ago I connected an ethernet cable from the airport extreme to the ethernet port of the Canon MP 640 and was able to scan. Unfortunately I had to reinstall all the system and in doing that I am now unable to get the ethernet connection to the Canon MP 640 to work as a scanner.

I believe I set up a separate printer in the print and fax preferences for the MP 640 via ethernet. But now I don't find any way how to do that.

I probably should've taken extensive notes on how I set up the first time but I never thought I'd have to do it again especially not just 2 days later.

Any comments on how to configure the MP 640 printer as an ethernet printer (and scanner) via one of the three LAN Internet outports on the AirPort Extreme would be extremely appreciated.

Best regards,

Steve

Hi Steve,

The MP 640 is wireless, correct? That's a very good thing. You don't need an Ethernet or USB connection at all. When setting up a printer, it is best to decide how it will be connected and configure it that way, without plugging in either a USB or Ethernet cable.

Scanning will not work with the Express's USB port. All that will enable is its print function. Fortunately the scanner will work over wireless or Ethernet because the Canon is a network device.

Some printers require a USB to initially configure them however, after which you can use it wirelessly. I do not know if that Canon is one of them.

It does need to "join" your wireless network. This means it must receive an IP address from your Extreme, and it also means it must use an IP address within the range of DCHP addresses assigned by the Extreme. If that sounds confusing it's because it is. Look through Canon's documentation and determine how to get it to do that.

This may help: http://gdlp01.c-wss.com/gds/3/0300002453/01/MP640_NST_EN-US_V1.pdf

Once it successfully joins your network, you may want to delete its existing entry in System Preferences > Print & Scan, and add it again. Its previous "location" on your network may no longer be valid.

This is really gerat and I will be getting back with more feedback shortly. I have other Airport Extreme setup issues which I first need to resolve before attempting this-- but in the next 24 hours it has to be working! (I'm spending more time on this than on my real work!)

Thanks and more soon, and others are of course welcome to comment!

The only thing I would add to edex67's response is to suggest you assign a static IP address to your Canon printer / scanner. The only requirement for the IP address is that it exists on your wireless network's subnet. In other words, if your Extreme is configured to distribute IP addresses in the range 10.0.1.x then assign it an address such as 10.0.1.100. Also, to ensure your Extreme does not assign that address to anything else, you can place it in its list of "reserved" IP addresses.

Once you do that, you should delete the printer in your list of devices in System Preferences > Print & Scan, and add it again using its new, permanent "location".

I am not using an AirPort network right now otherwise I could attach a screenshot.

This way, your Canon will always reside at the same location on your network. Though it is not necessary to do this, it tends to prevent confusion regarding its connection method.

John,

I marked this SOLVED but I just realized that I really don't know how to assign a static IP to the Canon MP640.

Do I do this in System Preferences on my Mac? If so Network or Print/Fax preferences? Or do I do this in Airport Utility? I've looked but don't see where I can assign a static IP address.

Thanks for any comments--- I can create a new post if you think that is best.

Assigning the Canon an IP address is easily accomplished using the Canon's front panel controls. Reference its Network Setup Troubleshooting Guide, page 9. You will need to use the "Manual Setup" option as described in Step 8.

Bear in mind that after you change the printer's IP address, the existing print queue entry in your Mac's Print & Scan will no longer be valid. You must delete the existing printer and add it again. If you get lost and want to undo this change, use the Canon's front panel controls and repeat the steps beginning on Page 9, this time selecting "Auto Setup" instead.

here it is:

In the above example, the Extreme is set to distribute IP addresses in the range 10.0.1.2 to 10.0.1.90 inclusive. If you wanted to "reserve" an IP address within that range so that the Extreme will not attempt to assign one to it, just click the + button and enter the address. The Extreme will skip those addresses when distributing them via DHCP.

John,

OK I installed Airport Utility 5.6 but it does not look like that earlier screen-shot you sent. Was that maybe an even earlier Airport Utility?? Further, AU5.6 seems to have less choices than Airport Utility 6.1--- See screenshot of AU 5.6:

NOW I DID JUST FIND the DHCP RESERVATIONS option with AU6.1--- BUT - I am in BRIDGE MODE and therefore making DHCP Reservations is not an option (greyed-out)--- however if I select DHCP or DHCP and NAT then I can access the DHCP Reservations. BUT ISN'T that going to cause some problems with the rest of my system, especially the nice, reliable, fast and single network WIFI that I now have running???

Let me know-- and also: If I don't change the printer IP address (is IPv4 the same as IP? And what is IPv6?)-- then will there potentially be a problem if I disconnect the ethernet cable, use that LAN connection for something else for a day or 2, and then re-connect to the MP640?

By the way-- my MB640 shows in the Print & Scan Preferences, but not in the Printer section, and not with an IP address, rather it says Airport Extreme (see additional screenshots here):

Above you can see the Canon MP640 listed under scanners - not as an ethernet printer, and see the shot below, it still doesn't seem to be listed with an "internet" (IP) location! But the latest Canon software MP Navigator EX that I use to scan has a MAC address listed for the scanner----

User uploaded file

Location is "Stephen's Airport Extreme" not an "IP Address" (like I see for the LaserWriter, even though the LaserWriter won't work yet because it has another IP address somewhat "hardwired" in it and I haven't tried to change that yet with my G4-733 running Mac OS 9.2.2…)

Let me know what to try (or not!) next.

Thanks,

Steve

Hi Steve,

Too many questions! Let me answer the first one first: when you select the Extreme in AirPort Utility, choose "Manual Setup", not "Continue". You will then see the screenshot I posted.

I'm not trying to avoid your other questions, but I am trying to accomplish many other things today and wanted to give you a quick answer.

Post a new question with your other subjects. I will try to answer when I find the time, but perhaps someone else can answer before I do.

John,

Your help is super and truly appreciated.➕ I DID now get the exact screen you showed so can use AU5.6--

I understand that: If I set a DHCP reservation that means I will move to either DHCP or DHCP & NAT mode (not "bridge").

OK BUT will that cause a problem with my WiFi that I setup? (I now have just the one network SteveBelWiFi)-- OR is the wireless setup independent of the Ethernet "DHCP / DHCP & NAT" vs. Bridge?"

No rush--- I have a working system now and trying to optimize it but nothing now urgent.
