I have a new imac and can't fiugre out how to connet my old HP printer to it. It's a HP printer and I downlaoded some software from their website, but I'm not getting anywhere. I must be missing some piece of the process? I think I need a step by step walkthrough. IT's NOT a wireless printer.

It would be helpful if you indicated the model of the printer.
Typically, you should only have to plug the printer in to your Mac via USB, then go to System Preferences, look for the Printers section, and the printer should be seen in the left hand pane. Click on the printer, then the plus sign to add it. Pretty easy.

OS version 10.8.2 printer model hp C4400.
Are you trying to connect this printer wirelessly or via USB cable?

I downloaded stuff from HP. I see the same HP printer package in my application. When I go to system prefernces - print and scan nothing shows up to add. I'm not sure how I'm supposed to get that HP driver in that list so I can click add an put it in.
Try rebooting your Mac.
Then...with the printer connected to your Mac (and powered on), go to System Preferences, Print and Scan. I'm assuming there are no printers in this list at this point. Click on the + sign in the Print and Scan window. Does your printer show up now?
