I'm having a hard time pairing my ipad with my Apple TV 3rd gen. My iphone 5 pairs fine via homesharing with the remote app, but my ipad 3rd gen just spins and spins without ever pairing. I've done everything this article suggests, but no help. Anyone?

What have you done? Have you entered the home sharing ID into the the iPad? I am not sure if ATV will support letting multiple Remote Apps control it. It might though.
I have turned on home sharing and the iPad shows me the Apple TV, but when I select it, it goes to connection screen and just spins forever, unable to connect. But again, the iPhone works fine. Seems like an odd limitation to not let me sync two devices if that's the case.
