sharing files/applications between computers

I just bought a Macbook Air and was wondering if there is a way to share the files or programs that are on my desktop Mac to my Macbook Air. My laptop mentioned something "migration assistant" but that sounds like it will transfer the files instead of sharing them. Basically, the files, programs and settings I have on my desjtop Mac, I want to be on my laptop. Is this even possible?
