Have a MBP that will not start if battery is in

MBP 17"...about 4 years old. Just upgraded to Snow Leopard and while have never had a problem before, if the battery is in and MBP not plugged in, will not start. If battery out and plugged in, runs as normal. If battery in and plugged in, starts to power up, makes initial startup "sound" and then powers off. Will continue to do this until it is unplugged. Battery shows full charge.

Any thoughts on why all of a sudden it will not boot with the battery in?

MacBook Pro, Mac OS X (10.6.3)
