You may not need to compress the file, recently Google Drive has announce the ability to send 10 GB* files via Gmail. To access Google Drive you just need to log in or create a free Google Account.
More information about this can be seen on this article:

*Google Drive does not restrict uploads by size, but by the amount of free space that you have in your Google Drive storage. Since your file is 1GB and given that you may have not used Google Drive previously, that 1GB file that your are trying send should fit with no problem. The free plan of Google Drive includes 5GB of storage.
Hope you find this information helpful!
It may just not be able to be compressed from 1GB to 20MB. You may have to segment the file and send it in 20MB 'pieces' making sure that the recipient has an unarchiver that can handle the segemented 'parts'.
The cheapest way to go about doing this is to use an app such as the free SimplyRAR - you can segment the files into sizes as small as 5MB (or smaller, I guess). Here's an example:
In it, I've a zip file and have elected to split the archive into 5MB files. The person that you send the files to would need a program to read the split RAR files and open RAR files. On the Mac, this can be accomplished with the free "The Unarchiver" from the App Store. If the other person is running Windows, there are dozens of free unarchiving apps that can handle RAR segemented files.
Good luck,
Clinton
