I have searched Finder, Trash and the applications folder but i can't find where it is kept.  I want to put the icon for Dashboard back in the dock - how can i do this?

do a spotlight search for it.

Should be in Applications (the main Applications folder under Macintosh HD, not the one in your User account).

If it isn't there, look under Desktop in case a previous attempt to put it in the Dock resulted in the mouse being released too early.

The combo update may replace anything you have inadvertently deleted.

    Mac OS X 10.6.8 Update Combo v1.1

You can reapply it over the top of any previously downloaded version.  I see that your profile says 10.6.8.

Then software update to pick up any new security, iTunes updates.

AFAIK, not necessariy. It will with some programs like Mail, but not everything. The Combo update is based on there being an initial install of 10.6.1, 2 or 3, or whatever base OS one started with, and its purpose is to update the OS to the latest version (assuming the Combo one runs is the 10.6.8.) It doesn't necessarily provide all the original OS components.
