No smoking sign on mac without cigarette :: what happened?

Thank you in advance for helping me!

I have a G4 AGP Pro Mac. Mac used only for graphic design purposes. My mac qualifies for latest Tiger installation.
Ran diagnostics and latest updates, all healthy/current!

OS 9.2.2 installed on mac on 210 Gig HD partitioned into two segments. One is 20 Gig the other is the remainder of gigs. The 20 gig partition has the OS 9 system software on it.

Ok, installed Tiger onto 20 gig drive.
Successful install and it restarted.
Then you see grey screen.
Apple icon, turning wheel.

Then after a long period of time you have a circle with a slash appear on the screen. Kinda looks like a no smoking sign on mac without cigarette.

Now what?

I have tried the following:
1. Boot from Tiger DVD. Utilities-->check drives. All ok.
2. Boot from Tiger DVD. Utilities-->fix
3. Boot from Tiger DVD. Utilities-->Chose OS X as startup
3. Zap Pram 3 times in a row and then Zap COOD.
4. Reinstall Tiger without anything attached to mac.
ie externals, dsl, printers, etc.

Now what??? Completely frustrating!

I am saving up for a new mac and do not have the option to purchase a new one yet. HD's are all new and are in perfect working condition.

Any ideas would be greatly appreciated! THANK YOU!

I'm very sorry here is the requested info:
Power Mac G4 (AGP Graphics)
350 MHz
System: 9.2.2 US
Carbon Lib 1.6
Internal DVD-R
Internal Zip Drive
SCSI Card installed
ATI, Rage 128 Pro
USB 0 1.5.6
USB 1 1.5.6
Firewire 2.8.5 (External Firewire CD-RW)

1st internal HD
1st volume: 91 GB (OS 9.2.2 installed and bootable: Tiger installed not bootable)
2nd volume 91 GB

2nd HD for just my files 120 Gig

Mac boots up fine if you select OS 9.2.2 to boot up from. Consistently boots up fine in that selected system.

But if I try to boot up from Tiger OS v10.4.6 it has that symbol on it after awhile.

I do not have any other version of OSX to try out. I just purchased this CD from apple and had it fed ex to me due to having to work on this job. This job will earn me the last amount of money to allow me to buy another mac.

What actually does this symbol mean and what is happening?

Any other ideas of what to do?

Everything is current on OS 9.2.2. However I downloaded per your request to verify and tried to install. Correct, firmware current.

LOL/___sbsstatic___/migration-images/migration-img-not-avail.png My symbol name should be "broken folder" or "prohibitory sign"

Ok is my current status of what I have tried after reading those articles. Many thanks to MacJack for locating an article that addresses this issue/___sbsstatic___/migration-images/migration-img-not-avail.png 🙂

1. Reset PRAM and VRAM twice
2. Restarted in OS 9; then restarted holding X key
3. I got excited for it allowed me to setup TIGER/___sbsstatic___/migration-images/migration-img-not-avail.png YAHOO/___sbsstatic___/migration-images/migration-img-not-avail.png
4. But later it hung after registration, a blank blue screen. 😟
5. Restart again. Got "prohibitory sign" again
6. Restart holding "C" key with TIGER dvd
7. Repair permissions again
8. selected OS X startup; reset PRAM/VRAM it hung forever/___sbsstatic___/migration-images/migration-img-not-avail.png
9. Restarted, held "C" key with TIGER dvd in drive
10. selected OS 9 as startup; reset PRAM 3 X's

Will try this and any other options you suggest. I really don't want to erase this drive just yet. Will try this suggestion:

a. start up from OS 9
b. drag fonts folder to desktop
c. restart Mac in TIGER

Will keep you posted. Tried that whole article with no luck. However you are fantastic for finding it for me. One step closer to solution in my opinion User uploaded file

Ok this is what happened when I did the a, b, c method I found from another apple article that is not related.

In OS 9 I removed the system fonts folder and stuck onto desktop and restarted holding the X key.

It restarted fine! In fact I"m using safari right now to type this! 🙂

We'll see if the problem resurfaces when I reinstall the fonts folder.

Well seems that removing the fonts folder did help temp. However I still cannot do a fresh start or restart to OS Tiger without some help.

For the most part I have to start in OS9.2.2 and then select OS Tiger as my start up and then start up from there. However now that is not working and I am still receiving that annoying "prohibit" symbol.

I will continue to follow the rest of the recommendations from what you posted however I really do not want to reformat my new HD. In addition I would not be able to perform a full backup of my OS 9.2.2 either I'd have to let go of a lot of great software and am running out of time.

This mac provides me with my living.

Any advice would be appreciated.
Thank you in advance for your reply!

I've just come across a computer with the same problem.

I don't have the exact specs in front of me, but my client was trying to install an extra hard drive and got the same symbol.

The client is running Panther and tried to verify the drive with a Tiger DVD but got an error when the test started.

I did find some articles on the web saying that it might relate to bad ram, but when I switched out the RAM, I got the same error.

The computer is a G4 and does see the System(found by holding down the option key on boot up) but then does not load. It would seem to me that there is a corruption in the system somewhere, but I have no idea where to start. If I discover anything else, I will post ASAP.

Thanks

Well tried everything within that article and it still will not start up in Tiger without first starting up in OS 9.2.2

I've even tried re-installing Tiger too. 😟

The last thing to do is to completely wipe out this drive and reinstall everything however there would be a lot of programs and settings that I could never replace.

I understand that I could make a mirror copy of OS 9.2.2 however my hypothesis is that if I reformatted the drive, installed a fresh TIGER and then placed the mirror copy of OS 9.2.2 on it then I'd have the same issues again for they weren't resovled this time around. Correct?

Or am I not thinking correctly?

I've lost 3 days of work now due to this and a huge job is due next week. I need to do or think of something fast.

Anyone out there with ideas or help?

thanks in advance for helping me!

I did reinstall my OS X and that did not help.

I did learn that you have to keep your fonts out of the OS 9.2.2 folder except for the basics and then place in what you need as you need them. I used a font management program but had to remove that as well.

DAVE seemed to be a problem and I removed that program as well.

I also had to remove items from the startup folder. That helped tremendously. Now most often I can start up in OS X however I'm not at 100% yet.

I do understand that partitioning HD's is "so 90's" as you say however when you don't have money to purchase an additional drive then you have no other choice.

I hope to save for a new macintosh and thus hopefully soon I won't have these issues. However for now, I and other G4 users are having issues. Seems you have to take off a lot of software in order for Tiger to open each time.

My drives are 100%. I keep rechecking them just to make sure and have followed all apple's tech sheets as well.

If I start up in OS9.2.2 and then switch to OSX Tiger I'm fine, works great all day! But as soon as I shut down without switching to OS 9 it won't start up. Seems silly that I have to startup this way each and every time!
