I have a iMac (less than a year old and barely used!) and it won't make any sounds (not even the start up chime). System Preferences>Sounds says that No Output Devices found. I have tried a hard restart to no avail. Any suggestions?

Must not help, but worth a try: Reset NVRAM.

First, reset the PRAM > http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1379?viewlocale=en_US It will restore the speaker volume. After doing this, open System Preferences > Sound > Output and choose “Internal Speakers”. If it doesn't appear, it's probably a hardware issue, so take your Mac to an Apple Store
