Is a Thunderbolt external hard disc not compatible with an older Mac mini computer (only with firewire port) even using a thunderbolt-firewire adapter?

I have a new Western Digital thunderbolt driver but canät get it to work with my older Mac mini, using a thunderbolt-firewire adapter.

I guess I need to buy a newr Mac mini with thunderbolt!?

As far as I am aware these adaptors only work from the computer to a device, not as you are trying from a device to a computer. This is because the device (your hard disk) cannot load and run the required drivers to support the adaptor. So the following applies

New Mac with built-in Thunderbolt  ----> Thunderbolt to FireWire adaptor ---> FireWire device

    (above will work)

Old Mac without built-in Thunderbolt  <---- Thunderbolt to FireWire adaptor <--- Thunderbolt device

    (above will not work)

Thanks... That was my guess... I thought I'd at least would see the device on my mac mini, even though I might not be able to "use" it, but I guess it just doesn't connect at all and therefore not even displays on my mac mini.
