Audio output stopped working

This happened suddenly. Sometimes I plug in headphones, sometimes I plug in an audio system, into the small jack socket on my MB Pro 13" (November 2009).

Just today, this has stopped working and I can't listen to anything through my headphone or through my audio system.

Would this be because the socket has become defective, or is it a software issue?

All suggestions welcome.

Try a PRAM reset:

If that fails an appointment at an Apple store genius bar is a good idea.

Ciao.

Im going to explain my scenario with my first generation white macbook 1.83ghz Core Duo.

I had been using the laptop with optical audio out and display port/hdmi adapter into my reciever for netflix viewing when the port got stuck on the optical out, I tried everything, pram reset, SMC reset, adjusting various audio output settings, toothpick and pin trick all to no avail. Finally I made a backup of all my system kexts, deleted all of the kexts and reinstalled 10.6, just reinstalling over my current installation, no format. I ran the updates to 10.6.8 and it worked.
