My iPhone will not back up, what should I do?

My iPhone 5 will not back up. I have plugged it into the laptop several times but as I proceed to sync my phone, it gets to step 2, "Back Up", and stays on this, failing to back up. Cannot put anything onto my new phone as it is failing to back up, please HELP
