How can I synchronize with I-phone to Mac I-tune

How can I synchronize my i-phone 3GS to my Mac Itune.

I bought the new i-phone 5, but before using it, I would like to

keep my old i-phone data back-up on my PC.

I was told that if I connect i-phone with my Mac, synchronization will be

done automatically, but it does not.

I installed the new version of I-tunes, but I could not find the I-phone Icon.

If I could not use I-tunes, Can I use I-cloud in place of I-tunes?
