The unread sms count is wrong, how do I fix?

For the past two weeks my text messages show I have 4 unread messages and I don't. I've scrolled all the way down to the bottom of my text log and they have all been read. What do I do?

iPhone 4S, iOS 5.1.1

close out of the app, double tap the home button and then close out of the app.

then do a reset, hold down the home/power button together until you see the apple logo and then release, then wait for the phone to boot back up.
