I currently share an account with multiple family members. I would like to create my own account. Can I keep all the music and Apps currently on my itouch and load them to my new account? Will my new account wipe out current items on my iPod?

You cannot transfer items form one account to another one. All purchase made with that account/Apple ID will always be tied to that account no Apple ID.
The new account will not wipe out all of your current content - you can keep that content - but will get a little hairy if you use the old account in order to download purchases made with account. You may lock yourself out of your new account for 90 days by associating the iPad to your old account.

Does this mean that I will need to reload all my free apps and music to my new itunes account? Can I switch back and forth my apple ID's for loading onto my itouch? Thanks for your response.
