The punchline to this article... "The USB 2.0 specification states that you can use up to 127 USB devices". None of which are backed up! Don't attach a data drive to the TC USB drive

After hours on the phone I've been told that devices attached to the USB port on a TC are never backed up. Is the community in agreement? If so I am of the belief that Apple is overselling the USB functionality of the TC USB port. There are many articles in the community stating that users are moving iPhoto and iTunes libraries to external drives connected to the TC. Do these users understand they are not getting backed up by TC?

The TC has no internal backup.. it is a target for TM not a true file store.. and we do tell everybody who is asking.. that we.. people who deal with TC issues daily.. do not recommend the use of the TC for anything but its main design use.. that is TM backup target.

TM cannot backup a network drive.. but every other 3rd party utility you care to mention does.. so if you want to use a USB drive on a TC.. then it can be backed up via superduper or CCC etc. Slowly.. as one of the things people will quickly discover is the TC USB connection is slow. Another reason not to use it.
