Q: If i can mirror from and older mac in iTunes why not from the mac itself?

I have a 2010 macboook pro, the forum states that I should not be able to use mirroring with apple t.v. however, I can mirror things from Itunes, if itunes can my computer should be able to as well, right?

Macbookpro, Mac OS X (10.6.3)

That's not mirroring, that's basic airplay. Mirroring is showing exactly what is on your computer via the Apple TV.

Airplay mirroring requires the newer processor to encode the video.

Mirror allows things outside itunes such as safari to be played on the TV. For a pre-2011 mac an app called airparrot will give you the mirror function.
