I just downloaded mountain lion and old apps won't work. Now what?

I've just downloaded mountain lion onto my macbook. I came from 10.6.8 and bypassed Lion. Now it won't let me get to things like my microsoft word in which I have files that I need. I get a message that says "You can't open the application Microsoft word because the PowerPC applications are no longer supported.

So how do I get to these files? I have a game that I enjoyed that gives me the same message. And they all have the white circle with the diagonal line through it. I'm sure there is a way around this, but what is it?

Anyone know?

Thanks for any help.

Thank you for the suggestions. All I want to do is access what is there right now. I will find another method for use in the future. Basically I use "Word" very infrequently, and when I do I use it as a kind of note pad.

I'm a musician, and one reason I used it was for a bio or resume. Now it's stuck in there and I can't get to it. Otherwise I very rarely use things like that. Which was why it was such an old version.

I know this is not the proper forum for a rant, but I hate these upgrades and changes. I was two years with my snow leopard and was very happy with it. Now the scroll thing is different. Why? I have spent the whole day changing things and updating. Sorry, I'm getting way of track.

Is there a way I can get to my existing documents in microsoft word? I guess I will have to use Lanny's suggestion and upgrade the "Word" that I have.

Reinstall 10.6.8 from the backup you made before you upgraded to Mountain Lion.

Here is a recent post I assembled for a similar question:

Unfortunately you got caught up in the minor miracle of Rosetta. Originally licensed by Apple when it migrated from the PowerPC CPU platform that it had used from the mid-1990's until the Intel CPU platform in 2006, Rosetta allowed Mac users to continue to use their library of PPC software transparently in emulation.

However, Apple's license to continue to use this technology expired with new releases of OS X commencing with Lion (and now Mountain Lion). While educational efforts have been made over the last 6 years, the fact is that Rosetta was SO successful that many users were caught unaware UNTIL they upgraded to Lion or Mountain Lion.

Workarounds:

1. If your Mac will support it, restore OS X Snow Leopard;

2. If your Mac will support it, partition your hard drive or add an external hard drive and install Snow Leopard into it and use the "dual-boot" method to choose between your PowerPC software or Lion/Mt. Lion;

3. Upgrade your software to Intel compatible versions if they are available, or find alternative software that will;

3. Install Snow Leopard (with Rosetta) into Parallels:

Full Snow Leopard installation instructions here:

http://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?t=1365439

NOTE: STEP ONE of the instructions must currently be completed on a Snow Leopard or Lion Mac and the resulting modified Snow Leopard.cdr install file can then be moved over to your Mountain Lion Mac for completion of the remaining steps. A recent poster has offered a solution for Mountain Lion users that do not have access to Snow Leopard or Lion Macs.

NOTE 2: Computer games with complex, 3D or fast motion graphics make not work well or at all in virtualization.

Thank you. I don't like it, but thank you anyway. When you say to upgrade my software to intel compatible, you are talking specifically about the microsoft word, I'm assuming. I'm not going to bother with trying to put snow leopard back on. Just reading what you wrote makes me dizzy and my head starts to spin. "Dual-boot," "Parallels." I wear shoes. I don't own any boots, and I only know of two parallels, parking and universes.

I'll see what I can do to upgrade. Man, I can't open up anything that is a word document. How are people dealing with this? I get a lot of e-mails saying "Please send as a word document" things like that.

Should I just go and get a brand new version of word? And will this Open Office software, as stephenfrombrownsburg suggested give me access to my already existing word files?

Okay, I've calmed down a little bit. If I reinstall snow leopard, is it a fairly simple process? Then I would obviously have two operating systems. The whole partition the hard drive thing makes me queasy. I'm thinking to just put the original snow leopard disk into the computer and follow all of the prompts. Yes? No?

Or, is there something like may this Open Office software that will allow access to my existing word files?

Sorry for all the questions man. You're dealing with a nursery school toddler here. I flunked kindergarten. Hey maybe I should just go to the local apple store and pay a little bit and have them do it. And I can yell at them a little bit also. Might be therapeutic. "Old habits die hard."

Yes, Text Edit does work. Of course it comes up in the Text Edit window as just pure text. Any form and layout is completely lost, BUT, at least you do get the basic content and can then transfer that somehow to another application that might give you a proper form and layout.

So all is not lost. Thank you very much. Man, how do you guys know all of this stuff. You must spend hours on this or have you read the manuals over and over and from cover to cover? Ha, that's funny. Cover to cover. Shows you where my head is at with regard to technology.

Here's how I back up my computer. I get lots of notepads and write down on paper, everthing that is in the computer, then save the stacks and stacks of paper in a metal file cabinet. That's a pretty good back up system. Takes a while though.

I think I'm going to check out OpenOffice. I went to their forum and they said I should be able to open up old versions of word.

I am actually surprised that Text Edit lost all of the formatting; try this:

Launch Text Edit, go into Preferences under the Text Edit menu and be sure that Rich Text is selected. Then close Preferences and quit Text Edit.

Now launch Text Edit again and open a formatted Word document again and let me know if there is a different result.

Others have reported that OpenOffice is a good replacement, too.

Office 2011 is the current version and is Lion/Mt. Lion compatible. Some people hate the new interface and choose to use Office 2008, which is also Lion/Mt. Lion compatible.

You did not express your reason for upgrading to Mt. Lion nor any specific features of Mt. Lion that you need on an on going basis. So, probably your best bet is to restore OS X Snow Leopard and be happy there. I have no experience with this procedure and others will have to give you instructions if you choose this course.

Yes: some of us express our creativity through the use of computers instead of keyboards... Sad, but true!

If that is your attitude to backing up your data and safeguarding against data loss, then may I ask why you would bother to own a computer in the first place? Not much anyone can really do for you that hasn't been mentioned, I'm afraid.

Good luck

Michael I'll give it a shot and report back.

And Peter, I hope you were kind of kidding, cuz I was. Believe me, I've learned my lessons the hard way in the late 90's with two failed hard drives that weren't backed up. Oh, but actually I did have everything in my file cabinet in the basement, but the basement flooded and the ink ran.

Do you play a 335 or just use it as your avatar?

Play a Gretch White Falcon actually, also a locally made Noyce Shark. Sorry, I thought you may have been serious on the backup issue. My mother used to take photos of the screen as a backup system, and THEN put them into iPhoto for secure backup!!! lol

But if you do have a backup of your Snow Leopard system from before you updated, it may well pay to reinstall it from your backup and go back to where you started. Snow Leopard is still a great OSX and still one of the most stable that Apple have made.

Good luck

That's pretty funny. But at least your mom uses computers. I have tried and tried to get my mom to at the very least use e-mail. I had to go out and have a drink after my first attempt at trying to teach her. A Gretsch White Falcon huh! Nice guitar. I've always like Gretsch. Do you play jazz, country? Certainly you don't play rock on it. But then again I still back up on legal pads, so you never know.

And someone give a holler to Michael that I tried Text Edit and Rich text was already selected and I still couldn't open a word document. The only way it will open is to open Text Edit > File > open and from there opening whatever document I choose. And it comes up without the proper layout.

In Text Edit when I click File > Open and then choose which document I want, there is also something at the bottom that has a box which is checked asking if you want to ignore rich text commands so I unchecked the box and a blank page opened up, so I dragged the word document onto the page and it looked like it was getting closer to opening it up properly, but alas, no cigar. I tried everything I could check, click.

Michael, get back to the drawing board and come up with some more options. Work your memory and computer knowledge. I know you've got it in there somewhere.

Thanks for your help.

I just downloaded mountain lion and old apps won't work. Now what?
