Q: Time Machine not showing Latest backup in Restore.

I recently bought a MacBook Pro and want to convert my latest TM backup from my old iMac to my Macbook Pro.  I plugged in my imac's Time Machine to the MBP.. When I COM-R and do a Restore it shows my latest backup is Nov 18,2012!!  Today is January 12, 2012.Why wont it show the latest backup?? I know my TM backs up daily?!?

I currnently have an iMac

I just bought a Macbook Pro.

(both running Mt Lion)

 

I want the Macbook Pro to mirror the iMac so I can wipe the iMac drive and sell it.

 

Ive used Time Machine before (when I got the iMac last year) to transfer (mirror) my old iMac to my new.

 

Thought it'd be jsut as easy  to do from iMac to MBP, but not so much.

 

When I say mirror.. i Mean look EXACTLY like my iMac.  Same Dock Apps, same Desktop iCons, same Wallpaper.. SAME EVERYTHING.. I've done it before..

 

However, when I run the MBP in Restore Mode and try it doens't see any backups when I have the Time Machine Disk that Ive been using on my iMac for a year.  It says "No OS X system backups were found"

 

Ive also tried Migration Assistant. 

 

When it asks me starts searching for the drive (Time Machine drive), and yes its plugged in.. the status wheel just keeps turning and turning.. (which to me means it can't find it)

 

Im so frigging confused.. Ive done this twice before SEEMLESSLY, and it worked perfect..

 

This time.. for some reason it's telling me I have no Backups.. but when I reconnct the TM disc to the iMac that its been backing up.. I have Backups.  I don't get why the MBP isnt reading it in Restore mode or Migration Asst.

    I press continue, enter the password, get brought back to this screen, press continue again, and then only get my wife's backup to choose from.

    No apps are open and no disk images are mounted upon my opening MA.

    That's Icon View.  It doesn't show the contents of the folder(s).  Actually, it's not showing the "Data" folder at all. -- there should be one folder representing the TC's internal HD, like this:

    Inside the Data "folder" should be the sparse bundles.

     

    Very strange.  Try Column View.

    I'm still not sure how you're getting that display (perhaps you've renamed the "Data" folder to "... Family Time Capsule," but in any event, it does show both sparse bundles properly.

     

    And you can open your sparse bundle. 

     

    The spinning icon under DEVICES in the sidebar means Time Machine is doing a backup.  That's a problem:  Migration Assistant automatically uses the most recent completed backup.

     

    So, turn Time Machine OFF and cancel the backup. 

     

    If the backup has completed, you may have to re-mount the disk image (double-click the sparse bundle). The new backup will be date-stamped after the 9:23 one you want (per the second sample), so delete the new one.  If the backup didn't complete, it will still have ".inProgress" in the name and Migration Assistant will ignore it, so you don't have to delete it.

     

    Try Migration Assistant one more time.  If it doesn't find your backups, they may be damaged.  See if you can repair them, per #A5 in Time Machine - Troubleshooting.

    This is what I see when I enter DU.  I have no option to repair .sparsebundle, only the subfolder, 'Time Machine Backups.'  Should I repair 'TMB' then?

    Did you try Verify Backups by holding Alt/Option and selecting the TM icon in your menubar?  If not, try that.

     

    If that's not available, yes, use Disk Utiilty.  Repair Disk isn't enabled for the sparse bundle if the disk image is already mounted (why, I have no idea). You should be able to repair it by selecting either one.

    Ok, I verified and there were no messages of anything that followed so I presume it went ok.

    I ejected all backup/TM-related images from desktop.

    TM is set to off.

    I ran MA:

    All I want is for DU or MA to see the backup I made on 1/13/13 so I can restore the files and settings.

    Did you display the log messages, per the tan box in #A5?

     

    EDIT:  and please follow the instructions in the message you got.  Be sure the sparse bundle is not mounted elsewhere.  See #C12 in Time Machine - Troubleshooting if necessary.

    Oh, I understood you to say that I didn't need to use DU if VB went ok...

    I'll use DU to repair my backup sparse bundle and then proceed to #C12 if necessary.

    Correct -- sorry, I thought you meant you'd used DU but didn't see any messages.

    Don't bother -- if the Verify had failed, you'd have gotten a message.

     

    and then proceed to #C12 if necessary.

    Just do that.  Be sure the sparse bundle is ejected.  Double-check the other Mac, too.

    Huh?  Not sure what you mean by that -- what is TMP?

     

    Are you sure you're in #C12?  It shows how to eject the disk images, and if that doesn't work, how to use Airport Utility to Disconnect all users.

    No.  That would copy the entire sparse bundle (your backups) onto your internal HD (first erasing what's already there).  But since you're running from it, it won't erase it.
