Based on what I've seen the TC isn't the culprit here, it's the software on Mac failing to decrypt with recovery mode.

Sorry to be so long responding -- had thunderstorms and the cable/internet/phone were out until a few minutes ago.

That's very strange.  I've tested it (not to the TC's internal HD, but to a USB drive connected to it), with no trouble, and haven't seen any similar problems posted here.  I suspect the majority of folks don't use encryption over a network (that's a new feature with Mountain Lion), but if it were a general problem, there would have been some reports.

I'll try to get a chance tomorrow to set up another test, and post back with the results.

    Hi Pondini

I was hyper active yesterday my last post was at 1am and now I am rushing to be at the office, so, don't worry about me waiting, I was sleeping after I posted that last night.

It would be great to see your findings. But, in the mean time, please mark this as your lowest priority as I solved my problem, I think it's more worrying to go through the Thunderstomrs and be safe than just a piece of tin...

Good luck Pondini, I hope you and your family are all safe.

    Kind Regards

    Heider

Just tried it, and it worked fine for me.

I do a lot of testing, but don't think I'd tried the combination of encrypted, TC set up with Secure Shared Disks with Accounts, and a full restore in a while, so that's what I did.

As far as I can tell, it's exactly what you did:

Set TC Disks to Secure Shared Disks with accounts

Created one account with Read and Write access

Selected it as backup destination; checked Encrypt backups, created encryption password

Did initial backup, then one incremental

Powered off, restarted in Recovery mode

Selected Restore From Time Machine Backup

    Selected the TC

    Entered the Account Password

    Then the Encryption Password

Got the window showing both Backup Dates & Times on the left, OSX versions on the right

    Selected the first one

Then the next window appeared to select the restore destination

I didn't continue to do the actual restore, but clearly the backups were recognized and it would have worked.

It shouldn't matter, but just to confirm, what version of OSX are you on, and what version of firmware is on your TC?

    Good morning Pondini

Thank you very much for your efforts on this, I don't know why you are seeing the database correctly whilst mine is not working as expected (as per earlier video).

My versions you asked are as follows:

    1) MacBooKPro 13" (Mid2012) OSX Latest (with updates and all), version 10.8.3, (12D78) Processor 2.9GHz Mem: 8GB

    2) TimeCapsule: 2TB Capsule Version 7.6.3 (Also Latest)

Both items were bought just about 2-3 months ago brand new.

Please confirm if the hardware you tested is same to mine, I wouldn't be surprised if it worked because it's an older hardware etc (seen it before).

Anyhow Pondini, I will no longer be able to spend much time on this anymore as I must meet a deadline that's takine me day and night to finish, and this MAC is only for my Mrs' to use for now.

Thanks again for all the help.

    Best Regards

    Heider

Not the same, but it shouldn't matter.  The software/firmware is the thing.  Yes, some apps & system functions may work differently on older hardware, but I've never seen a difference with Time Machine.

    I'm on a 2009 iMac, 10.8, and a 1 TB 3rd generation Time Capsule with 7.6.3.

    Very strange.

You're quite welcome -- just wish we'd come up with an answer.

    Thanks Pondini,

As I mentioned earlier, I've done my backup on another device that I trust more when things go wrong.

I'm keeping the TC (believe it or not, have no time to even go out and refund it !!!)... I'm keeping it for file-system to revert back into when there is a problem.

Thanks again mate, I'm sure we'll talk later.

    Kind Regards

    Heider

    Hi Pondini,

Just a quick update on this, I've downloaded the latest Apple updates including the Firmware last week and the 6.3 AirPort utility this morning.

It seems that with this latest download (not sure which one of them though), the issue is fixed now. I can confirm now that I can see the updates and restore items listed properly on my restore window with the Recovery option.

This should make our life easier as we go along.

    Thanks & Regards

    Heider

No idea why that fixed it, but maybe just resetting the TC with the firmware did it.

    Glad it's sorted out, anyhow!

I just updated my HD after a fail and restored to a new internal HD from my latest TM backup.

When I open up time machine now, it doesn't show any earlier backups.

The restore seemed to work fine but now TM also says it doesn't have enough disk room.

(the new HD is larger, but the data that's on it is the same as before.)
