I have 2 eSATA adapters, 1 from Silicon Image and the other is a Sonnet Tempo Edge 6Gb/s. They were working fine on my Early 2008 15"MBP under Mountian Lion, but now in my new (bought refurbished from Apple website) 17" MBP they won't work. It seems like they aren't even getting power. Anybody have any ideas?

The model you have doesn't have ExpressCard slots - the slot you have is an SD card slot.
Probably the reason nothing's working...

I'm sorry...what? All of the 17" MBP's have ExpressCard 34 slots, it was the 15" MBP's that switched to SD.. and the difference is pretty obvious due to the sizes....
Oops - my bad! I've never had a 17" MBP... but I see now, in MacTracker, that the 17" does have an ExpressCard 34 slot.
Sorry - I feel like an idiot - maybe a late 2011 17" MBP user will step in...

If neither card is working in the Included Express card slot then I'd say it is time for a trip to the Apple store Genius Bar for a checkup and more then likely a Replacement Logic board as the card slot is soldered to the LB and on yours it is broken.
I suggest you buy the Applecare extended warranty if you haven't already. Because if something like this happens again after your standard warranty runs out it will cost you many hundreds of dollars to have it fixed.
