Q: cannot connect my time capsule, to internet

I have been in love with apples time capsule forever. Recently i received one as a gift; but little did i know that i would wnat to break this elegant piece of plastic, just two days after i unboxed it. I thought just like every other apple product that i've tried, connecting it would be a piece of cake, but oh no...

Now, this is what happened:
I unplugged my modem first and then connected the Ethernet cable to the WAN port of the time capsule. then, i plugged the modem (not the access point, the othe one which has the DSL cable connected to it) and then waited for a while till the internet light turned on on it. then i plugged the time capsule and waited for its indicator to start flickering. then i opened airport utility and waited for it to find the time capsule. after a few moments and answering a few questions, airport utility was done finding it but there was a notification badge on time capsule, telling me that there are 2  problems. the internet connection and the DNS. from this point on, i tried every possible thing i could have imagined. i set up a DNS and got rid of its error. but no luck on the internet connection eversince. i set up IPs and it didn't help; set up DHCP + NAT and nothing happened. played around with wireless options, network options, tried bridging the device, using pppoe, resetting the device... nothing works. the time machine feature works just fine, but since it requires switching to another network and disconnecting my internet connection, i would want to have the time capsule set up in a way that i would not need to disconnect from internet in order to get a back up. help!

What DSL modem do you have?? Is it also a router, and have you been using it as your main router?

In most of these situations where you have existing network that is working.. configure the TC in isolation from that network, to bridge mode. Once you have done that plug it in..

Unfortunately plugging into a running network can have bad effects.. especially if the existing equipment happens to use the same IP range as the TC which is not uncommon at all.

So I suggest you put everything back as it was.. you probably have done that to get internet connection now.

I strongly recommend using the older 5.6 utility.. you are running Lion according to your profile.. just download and install it.

Go to the internet tab, connection sharing and select bridge.

hey! thank you for your time and effort.
actually i have a DSL modem connected to a wireless router (which my isp calls "residential gateway") and that router is the device which i want to replace. i tried the thing you mentioned but it didn't work. i really don't know if the TC needs any kind of setting before you connect it, because on every apple manual i checked, it says to plug the modem, the connect the wan and thats it. do i need to set the DNS? the IP? or anything else?

btw, my computer is running on mountain lion now.
checking on apples manuals, i saw an option which is ideal for me... as you guessed corecctly i moved back to my previous setting to have internet again. but the ideal for me now, is to have the TC as my wireless router so the backups won't interrupt my internet connection. that is suggested on the apple manual as well... thank you again...

Problem is, that ISP in different places have different ways of running ADSL.. particularly authentication.

Does your "residential gateway" use pppoe authentication..

if so you should be able to unplug it and plug in the TC.. setup wan to pppoe client and put in your ISP username and password.. which of course you have to know.

If your ISP does not use pppoe authentication then sorry the TC will not work. You need to bridge it and plug it into the existing residential gateway.. it will work as it is purely a client in that setup.. but wireless will work fine.

On ML load 5.6 utility which will give you far better control.

How to load 5.6 into ML.

    1. Download 5.6 for Lion.

    http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1482

Click to open the dmg but do not attempt to install the pkg.. it won't work anyway.

    2. Download and install unpkg.

    http://www.timdoug.com/unpkg/

Run unpkg on the desktop.. it is very simple.. drag the AirPortUtility56.pkg file over to unpkg.. and it will create a new directory of the same name on the desktop.. drill down.. applications utilities .. there lo and behold is Airport utility 5.6 .. drag it to your main utilities directory or just run it from current location.

You cannot uninstall 6.1 so don't try.. and you cannot or should not run them both at the same time.. so just ignore the toyland version.. the plastic hammer.. and start using 5.6.. a real tool.
